C

entral Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo has publicly announced he is ready to contest the 2024 presidential election after several local branches of at least two parties within the United Indonesia Coalition (KIB) declared support for his nomination.

It was the first time that the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P)  politician openly expressed his intention to run for president after months of evasive responses, which analysts say was due to the fact that Megawati Soekarnoputri, the powerful PDI-P matriarch, has yet to give her approval for his presidential bid.

“As long as it’s for the good of the nation, we’re always ready to take on [this mandate]”, the silver-haired politician said during a televised interview on Tuesday.

He said that he respected the political process within his party, which has enough seats at the House of Representatives to nominate its own candidate, and other political parties that take into consideration the results of political surveys, which have consistently placed him as the most electable candidate.

“The voice of the people cannot be ignored.”

When asked about Ganjar’s latest move, the PDI-P leadership said that he had only expressed his readiness to contest the 2024 election and did not declare himself a presidential candidate, which would have been an overstep.

“What was conveyed by Ganjar should not be turned into a political gimmick. Because being in a political party is like that. Everyone should be ready to be assigned,” Hasto Kristiyanto, secretary-general of the PDI-P, told reporters on Wednesday.
