T

he Chinese ambassador to Indonesia has given an assurance that the recent deadly accident at the construction project of the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway (KCJB) is not a reflection of the safety of the future train service.

Chinese Ambassador Lu Kang told reporters on Wednesday that only two workers were injured, which was not in accordance with the statement by PT Kereta Cepat Indonesia China (KCIC) that there were four casualties in the incident, which also caused the deaths of two workers, all of whom were from China.

KCIC is a joint venture between a consortium of state-owned enterprises (SOEs) and several Chinese railroad companies, which oversees the construction of the high-speed railway.

Both injured workers have since stabilized, Lu said, adding that one was discharged from the hospital on Tuesday.

“The two workers that died came to Indonesia to build the Jakarta-Bandung railway and contributed to the cooperation between China and Indonesia. They died doing this work,” said Lu. “This is an incredibly painful tragedy.”

The fatal accident occurred when an engineering car involved in the project careened off the rail track around 5 p.m. on Sunday in Cempaka Mekar village, Padalarang, West Java.
