An operation to separate a pair of twins, joined at the chest and abdomen and sharing a single heart, has been postponed after the boys developed stomach complications.
onjoined twins sharing a single heart, who were scheduled for an operation to separate them, are receiving intensive care at Adam Malik General Central Hospital in Medan, North Sumatra, after suffering a gastrointestinal injury.
The babies, both male, were born on Feb. 2, 2023 facing each other, joined at the chest and abdomen.
Hery Wahyudi, the twins’ father, said the medical team had postponed the separation operation due to the complication.
“The babies are still under the medical team’s supervision. I don’t know when the operation will be,” Hery told The Jakarta Post on Wednesday.
Hery, a bottled water delivery worker in Datuk Tanah Datar district, Batubara regency, is staying at the hospital.
He said his wife had been weakening after undergoing a C-section to give birth to their sons and hearing of the latest developments.
“She [collapsed] after learning about their condition,” Hery said, adding that the family did not have the money to pay for his wife’s treatment or the twins' operation.
Deni Syahputra, acting head of the Batubara Health Agency, said the regency administration would help cover the family’s medical expenses.
“We will help and coordinate with the hospital for the twins’ treatment” so their operation can proceed," he said. (dre)
