ustralian Ambassador to Indonesia Penny Williams and mayor of Bogor, West Java, Bima Arya launched on Monday the Australian Reading Corner at the Bogor City Library and Gallery.
Williams said that the space was a collaboration between the Australian Embassy and the Bogor city administration, which will provide an opportunity for local residents to explore more than 300 books and educational materials on Australian culture, art, education and history.
“I hope these books will give new insight on contemporary Australian society and culture and inspire future generations, future Indonesian leaders, and tighten the Indonesian-Australian relations,” the ambassador said.
Bima said that despite technological advancements, books remained irreplaceable.
“Every day we see around 700 hundred visitors to the library and gallery, this means we still have many book readers. I’m still uncomfortable with digital books,” he said.
Williams, who is fluent in Indonesian, began her tenure in Jakarta in 2021 as Australia’s first woman to hold the position.
The ambassador likened her posting to a pulang kampung (homecoming) as 40 years ago she participated in a student-exchange program in Indonesia and lived here for a year when she was in the second year of high school.
