he Attorney General’s Office (AGO) is investigating kickbacks given to Supreme Audit Agency (BPK) official Achsanul Qosasi after he was named a suspect in an alleged corruption case pertaining to the botched procurement for a 4G telephony project at the Communications and Information Ministry.

On Friday, an investigation team under the assistant attorney general for extraordinary crimes (Jampidsus) named Achsanul a suspect and arrested him following an interrogation session at the AGO headquarters in Jakarta.

He was summoned for questioning as a witness in the case. The interrogation followed court testimonies that Achsanul received Rp 40 billion (US$2.5 million) in kickbacks for the project.

After three hours of questioning, investigators immediately detained Achsanul. The BPK official refused to answer reporters’ questions while being escorted out of the AGO building.

“Investigators found strong evidence to name him a suspect in the case,” Jampidsus investigation director Kuntadi said in a press briefing on Friday.

AGO investigators will look into the motives behind the kickbacks.

“We are still investigating whether the Rp 40 billion was given to thwart our investigation into the corruption case or to affect the BPK audit process on the project,” Kuntadi said.
