Police deploy hundreds of personnel and divert traffic as national strike begins.
orkers from several regions began a national strike on Thursday, demanding a 15 percent increase in the city/regional minimum wage (UMK).
"The initial national strike is already starting in different industrial areas of the EJIP [East Jakarta Industrial Park], MM 2100 and Delta Silikon. The strike is also happening in other cities as well," Labor Party president Said Iqbal said, as quoted by tempo.co.
The industrial areas are in Bekasi regency, West Java.
Said added that the national strike started at 9 a.m. and aimed to ensure that acting governors followed the UMK recommendations submitted by acting regents and acting mayors.
"If the governor changes the submitted recommendations, we will continue the national strike," Said added, as quoted by cnnindonesia.com.
For Jakarta, Said requested a revised provincial minimum wage (UMP) increase from 3.6 percent to 15 percent, as announced by the Jakarta administration on Nov. 21.
The provincial minimum wage in Jakarta was increased from Rp 4.9 million (US$315.18) to Rp 5.06 million.
