P

resident Joko "Jokowi" Widodo said on Tuesday that social media personalities and content creators who published their work on global tech platforms would not be subject to the government’s newly passed publishers' rights regulation.

Speaking at a National Press Day event, the President said content creators could continue working with global tech platforms without disruption as the presidential regulation only concerned the platforms' relationship with media firms.

"I must insist that this new regulation will not apply to content creators [...]. Please go ahead as there’s no problem with that," Jokowi said.

Earlier this week, Jokowi signed the long-awaited presidential regulation, which will require tech giants such as Google and Meta to pay local media outlets for news content published on their platforms.

The rule brings Indonesia in line with Australia and Canada, which have enacted similar publishers' rights policies.

The presidential regulation, which will take effect in August, paves the way for media companies to negotiate partnerships with tech platforms in the form of paid licensing, revenue sharing and data sharing.

In his National Press Day speech, President Jokowi said the new regulation would not interfere with press freedom and would only concern the business relationship between tech platforms and media companies.

Separately, Press Council chair Nina Rahayu said the new regulation could be a boon for small- and medium-sized media firms, which currently lack negotiating power with the world's major tech platforms.

"For small and medium-sized media companies, especially ones that have been verified by the press council, this new regulation can provide an opportunity for them to collaborate with Big Tech companies," Ninik said.
