The Japanese man was arrested while trying to cross illegally into Malaysia.
apanese national Yusuke Yamazaki, 43, a fugitive listed on Interpol’s Blue Notice, was arrested on Jan. 31 by the Barelang Police near Batam city in Riau Islands while trying to cross to Malaysia illegally along with several illegal Indonesian migrant workers.
An Interpol Blue Notice is an international request for Interpol member states for information about a person’s identity, location or activities in relation to a criminal investigation.
Law and Human Rights Ministry Riau Islands regional office head I Nyoman Gede Surya Mataram said Yamazaki’s arrest started when several Barelang Police personnel were on a patrol on Bulan Island near Batam on Jan. 31 when they found a boat with five men and two women on board.
The boat was on its way to Johor Bahru, Malaysia. Five people on the boat were passengers, while the other two were a ship crew member and the boat’s owner.
“One of the passengers was a Japanese man with a passport for Hajime Hatanaka, which was a fake,” Nyoman said on Wednesday.
He said Barelang Police then handed over the Japanese man on Feb. 2 to the Batam Immigration Office for further investigation with the help of the National Police International Relations Division.
The officers found that the Japanese man's real identity was Yusuke Yamazaki, who is listed in the Interpol Blue Notice over fraud worth around Rp 1 trillion (US$64 million) in his home country.
“We will deport him [Yamazaki] to his home country because that’s where he is being prosecuted,” Nyoman said. He said Yamazaki would be transferred to Jakarta first before being deported back to Japan through Soekarno Hatta International Airport. (ami)
