The phenomenon began on Feb. 19 after days of heavy rain in Cibedug village, West Java, but a formal investigation has yet to take place to find the cause of the incident.
and movements for more than a week have caused the collapse of an elementary school in Cibedug village, West Bandung, and damage to dozens of buildings in the area.
The shifting in the ground in Cibedug initially occurred on Feb. 19, causing cracks that have continued expanding. The elementary school, SDN I Babakan Talang, collapsed on Thursday morning after a number of cracks appeared on the school building and in its yard. As the cracks continued to expand, the building’s walls started falling down.
Ilman Suherlan, head of Rongga district where the village is located, said the subsidence had continued in the area and the cracks on the ground were getting wider.
“I was at the school when it collapsed. The land is still moving,” he said on Thursday, as quoted by Kompas.com.
There were no victims as classes had been moved online since the subsidence was first observed.
Irlan said cracks in the soil appeared after days of heavy rain in the area. Aside from the school building, 10 houses were severely damaged, while another 44 houses were at risk.
"The incident started on Feb. 19, but now it has worsened. The soil has subsided over 50 centimeters," said the Cibedug village head Engkus Kustendi.
