uthorities in Badung, Bali, are investigating a fire that broke out in part of the province’s largest penitentiary Kerobokan on Tuesday afternoon, no casualties were reported in the incident.

The fire started in a prison block that had been emptied for renovation work. The fire was reported at around 4 p.m. and local firefighters were immediately notified. The fire was extinguished at 5.15 p.m.

“All prisoners are fine and in a good condition. None of the prisoners were in the block area as it is being dismantled for the new block construction project,” Kerobokan warden RM Kristyo Nugroho said on Tuesday.

Kristyo said only construction workers were in the area working on the old building at the time of the incident.

North Kuta Police chief, Adj. Comr. Muh Rizky Fernandez, said police were investigating the cause of the fire and would be questioning the construction project coordinator and Kerobokan Penitentiary’s security coordinator.

Fernandez said that the fire broke out among wooden materials used in the renovation project.

Kerobokan Penitentiary is currently home to 1,221 prisoners, including 53 foreign prisoners from all around the world. (dre)
