he House of Representatives’ Commission III chairman Bambang Wuryanto said the deliberation on the third amendment to Law No. 2/2002 on the National Police would be conducted openly.
This means all parties can supervise the process and note any articles in the bill that are considered damaging. However, he said the agenda for discussing the amendment had yet to reach Commission III, which oversees human rights and security issues.
"You can all watch – there is no behind-closed-doors deliberation. So don't be too suspicious," Bambang told reporters at the House compound in Jakarta on Wednesday, as quoted by Antara news agency.
The draft of the amendment has been criticized for expanding the police’s authority, including in intelligence and sovereignty matters.
House Deputy Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad said the police’s expansion of authority would still be confined by later-defined needs.
“We include some expansion of authority, but it is confined to the needs that will later be determined by the President," Dasco said, as quoted by tempo.co.
Dasco said the House would also prepare stronger oversight mechanisms by establishing protocols that must be strictly adhered to.
