G

ibran Rakabuming Raka, the eldest son of outgoing President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo, made an appearance on Monday afternoon at an event announcing Ridwan Kamil’s bid for governor of Jakarta.

Gibran, who is also vice president-elect to Defense Minister and president-elect Prabowo Subianto, joined the event midway through, as political party leaders were delivering speeches endorsing Ridwan's gubernatorial candidacy.

The ruling Onward Indonesia Coalition (KIM), cobbled together by Prabowo and Jokowi in the lead-up to the February presidential election, has endorsed Ridwan and his running mate, senior Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) politician Suswono, for governor and deputy governor of the city.

With almost all political parties backing the Ridwan-Suswono ticket, it is almost certain that former presidential candidate Anies Baswedan will be unable to form a coalition to back his own bid for the office.

Late last week, following a meeting with Prabowo, NasDem Party chairman Surya Paloh announced that the party had decided to drop its support for Anies in the Jakarta gubernatorial election.

Along with the National Awakening Party (PKB), NasDem had been expected to back Anies' reelection bid in the November regional election.

The PKB’s leadership has not officially withdrawn its support for Anies, but its recent announcement that it would support the Gerindra Party under the next administration has dashed any hopes of the former governor securing a nomination.

"Welcome Mas Gibran Rakabuming Raka, vice president-elect. Thank you," Ridwan said in his acceptance speech.
