T

he Labor Party (PB) has declared its support for the incoming administration of president-elect Prabowo Subianto during an event on Wednesday at the Main Stadium of the Gelora Bung Karno Sports Complex in Central Jakarta.

In his opening remarks, chairman Said Iqbal said the party’s newfound support for Prabowo, the Gerindra Party founder and advisory board chair, came on the back of asking him to provide solutions to six issues plaguing the country’s workers.

"The six [aspirations] and issues from the Labor Party, labor unions, farmer unions and other labor unions were conveyed with full sincerity and accepted [...] by Pak [Mr.] Prabowo Subianto," he told a crowd of hundreds of party members, as quoted by Kompas.com.

Among the party’s demands was for the incoming administration to review the hugely controversial Job Creation Law, particularly those provisions on labor that had long been accused of undercutting a wide range of workers’ rights and protections, Said continued.

The party also demanded the next government to eliminate the government’s outsourcing system for recruiting officials, which Said likened to modern slavery, and to elevate the status of noncontract teachers to members of the civil service.

According to Said, the party also called for decent wages, advocating for a minimum wage increase of between 8 to 10 percent by next year. He also asked for agrarian reform that would revert land rights from corporations to communities, as well as education reform to provide free schooling up to tertiary education.
