Police officer sacked over procedural error in case implicating colleagues

The dismissed detective, Second Insp. Rudy Soik, alleges that several police officers with the East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Police felt uncomfortable with his investigation into an alleged fuel smuggling ring in Kupang, leading them to report him to the internal affairs division.

C

ritics have slammed the dismissal of an East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Police officer over a procedural error in a fuel trafficking case that allegedly involved several police personnel.

The dismissed officer, Second Insp. Rudy Soik, was reported to the NTT Police’s internal affairs division in August for putting police tape around two buildings allegedly used to hoard illegally obtained subsidized diesel in the provincial capital of Kupang.

An ethics hearing held last week found Rudy guilty of violating standard investigation procedures by sealing off the buildings with police tape despite not having found evidence inside them and having failed to show the proper paperwork.

“His unprofessional actions during the case investigation made the owners of the sealed buildings feel ashamed. [Rudy] was proven guilty of violating the National Police’s Code of Ethics,” NTT Police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Ariasandy said on Sunday, as quoted by kompas.com.

He claimed the force had decided to dismiss Rudy over a series of disciplinary violations he committed over the past two months, including visiting karaoke rooms with his coworkers during working hours.

NTT Police internal affairs division chief Sr. Comr. Robert A. Sormin said on Monday that the dismissal decision was informed by witness testimony and other forms of evidence.

Robert added that Rudy had left the ethics hearing when the internal affairs team read out the sentence demand against him, which Robert said had reinforced the division’s decision to fire him.
