our people died following a landslide late on Tuesday in Peniron, Purworejo, Central Java, the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) has reported.
Abdul Muhari, a spokesman for the agency, said the remains of the deceased victims were found by a joint team led by the Cilacap Search and Rescue (SAR) agency after the landslide occurred on Tuesday night.
The joint SAR team had to pause search operations before continuing on Wednesday due to unstable soil conditions at the location, which posed the risk of further collapses following prolonged rain.
The victims were identified as Windah Wahyuningsih, 38-year-old, Susanti, 32 and two infants, whose remains have been handed over to their families.
One heavy machine has been deployed by the local administration to assist in the search operation amid the landslide debris.
The BNPB reported that the landslide occurred after prolonged rain hit the area on Tuesday afternoon, destabilizing the hilly terrain, causing it to collapse and bury the area below.
"Residents near the area are being assisted by the Purworejo BPBD. They are urged to remain vigilant against the potential for further landslides as rain is forecast to continue in the coming days," Abdul said on Wednesday.
