Yogyakarta police claimed that the victim suffered from chest pain after his arrest.
he Yogyakarta police are facing public scrutiny following reports of an alleged fatal beating of a 43-year-old man from Semarang, Central Java by six of its traffic officers last year.
The incident gained widespread attention after the family of the victim – identified only by the initial D – reported the officers to the Central Java Police over the weekend.
Central Java Police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Artanto said that authorities had questioned 13 witnesses in connection with the case, including D's family, neighbors and healthcare workers who treated him before his death.
"We have not yet summoned the six alleged perpetrators because we want to focus on questioning witnesses who reside in Semarang first," Artanto said on Tuesday as reported by Kompas.
He added that the Central Java police was working closely with the investigators at the Yogyakarta Police's Internal Affairs Division (Propam) as they were also questioning the six officers about the alleged attack.
The Central Java Police's forensic team exhumed D's body on Monday. They took some samples of his organs to determine his cause of death and to investigate whether he had been assaulted prior to his passing.
D's wife, 42-year-old Poniyem, said that three police officers showed up at their private residence on Sep. 21 and arrested her husband without showing an arrest warrant.
