A central fund of just over $1 billion has been earmarked to renovate and revitalize schools nationwide as part of the Prabowo administration's priority aim to improve national education.
he deputy minister of public housing and settlements said the government has set aside Rp 19 trillion (US$1.17 billion) from this year’s state budget to renovate elementary and secondary schools, including Islamic boarding schools (pesantren), across the nation.
“We are coordinating with the Elementary and Secondary Education Ministry as well as the Religious Affairs Ministry” on the school revitalization projects, deputy housing minister Fahri Hamzah said on Sunday during a visit to Pondok Pesantren Karang Santri in Bandunggede village, Temanggung, Central Java, as quoted by Antara.
Last November, President Prabowo Subianto asserted that education was the top priority of his administration.
“We place education as number one in our state budget,” the President said in his remarks during a Teachers Day event on Nov. 28, 2024, according to a press release on the presidential website.
Prabowo also said his administration’s education budget was the highest in the country’s history, and would be used to improve teachers’ welfare, enhance education infrastructure and support innovative programs.
The government’s plans this year include renovating and revitalizing 10,440 public and private schools nationwide.
“Schools are, I believe, centers of national development. As such, schools must be decent and clean. There shouldn’t be schools with falling roofs, there shouldn’t be schools without toilets for their students,” he said in the same release.
The President also stressed the importance of interinstitutional collaboration and called on all stakeholders, including teachers, to believe in the government’s commitment to improving national education.
