The police foiled attempts to traffic illegal migrant workers to Malaysia while the Indonesian Navy intercepted returning illegal migrant workers who sought to enter North Sumatra.
he North Sumatra Police foiled an attempt to smuggle 26 illegal workers from various regions in Indonesia to Malaysia and arrested three suspects.
Identified as MF, K and HR, the suspects worked as illegal migrant workers placement agents.
The three suspects were currently detained at the North Sumatra Police headquarters, North Sumatra Police General Crimes Directorate (Ditreskrimum) chief Sr. Comr. Sumaryono said on Monday.
Meanwhile, the 26 illegal migrant workers had been handed over to the North Sumatra office of the Agency for the Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (BP3MI).
“We are studying the shipment of Indonesian illegal migrant workers to Malaysia. The three suspects are being questioned,” Sumaryono said.
He said that the case was unraveled on Friday after the North Sumatra Police Ditreskrimum’s people smuggling team received information on the possible shipment of illegal migrant workers to Malaysia.
The team moved quickly and found the workers at a boarding house on Jl. Sedar in Tumpatan village, Batang Kuis district, Deli Serdang regency.
