rosecutors are seeking prison sentences ranging from 18 months to 3 years for three suspects of alleged bullying targeting Aulia Risma Lestari, a 30-year-old postgraduate resident at the Diponegoro University medical school who died by suicide last year.

Aulia’s death sent shockwaves across the country and brought national attention to the widespread, systemic bullying within Indonesia’s medical residency programs.

Prosecutors are seeking a three-year prison sentence for Taufik Eko Nugroho, the former head of the Anesthesiology Residency Program at Diponegoro University, for allegedly extorting residents by demanding unauthorized payments totaling Rp 2.4 billion between 2018 and 2024.

Prosecutors alleged that Taufik used approximately Rp 177 million of the collected funds for personal expenses. The remainder was reportedly used to pay for meals for senior residents and doctors, as well as to hire joki, individuals paid to complete academic assignments of the senior medical staff.

"Each resident was required to pay up to Rp 80 million in unauthorized fees. They complied out of fear that refusing would negatively affect their academic evaluations or lead to social exclusion during the residency," said public prosecutor Tommy Setyawan during a hearing at the Semarang District Court in Central Java on Wednesday.

“As a lecturer and head of the Anesthesiology Residency Program, the defendant should not have allowed an atmosphere of fear, coercion and psychological pressure to take root within the educational environment,”  he added.
