he government launched another of President Prabowo Subianto’s flagship education initiative on Wednesday, Sekolah Garuda (Garuda School), designed to nurture high-achieving students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

Managed by the Higher Education, Science and Technology Ministry, the initiative aims to prepare students for admission to the world’s top universities. At the launch, the ministry unveiled 12 Garuda “Transformative” High Schools selected from established institutions and began the construction of four new schools nationwide.

Touted as one of Prabowo’s quick wins in the education sector, the program targets to have 80 transformative and 20 newly-built Garuda Schools in operation by 2029.

Speaking at the launch event at SMAN Unggulan MH Thamrin in Jakarta, Higher Education Minister Brian Yuliarto said the initiative aimed to “create an education system that emphasizes academic excellence, equal opportunity, character development and preparation of Indonesia’s Golden Generation 2045 in science and technology.”

Addressing the students, Brian emphasized, “This program prepares future fighters whose competitors are no longer our peers in Indonesia, but from other countries”.
