etflix has Making a Murderer, FX has American Crime Story and now NBC is soon to follow suit with a spin-off of the TV network's popular crime series Law & Order, which is based on a  real-life  criminal case in the US.

The first season, titled Law & Order: True Crime - The Menendez Brothers Murders, will consist of eight episodes and tell the story of brothers Lyle and Erik Menendez, who were convicted of murdering their wealthy parents back in 1989.

“We’ve been talking with (series' creator) Dick about how to create an event series coming out of the Law & Order ripped-from-the-headlines brand,” said NBC Entertainment president Jennifer Salke as reported by Entertainment Weekly.

“This case captured the public’s attention like nothing before it as it examined taboo issues such as patricide and matricide in gruesome detail, all against a backdrop of privilege and wealth. We will recreate the cultural and societal surroundings of both the murders and trials when people were not only obsessed with the case but examining how and why these brothers committed these heinous crimes.”

The news about the Law & Order spinoff was announced right after Ryan Murphy's American Crime Story: People v. O.J. Simpson aired its season finale on April 5. (kes)
