"Today we are announcing that more than 1 billion people now use Facebook Messenger every month, making Messenger one of only a handful of apps worldwide that touch so many lives," posted the company on its newsroom.
Facebook invites users to join in the celebration as it has created a new floating balloon emoji for them to send to their friends while having a conversation.
In January, the number of people using Facebook Messenger each month had reportedly passed 800 million.
According to the company's official statistics, its monthly active users amounted to 1.65 billion, and 1.51 billion for mobile monthly active users, as of March 31, 2016. Approximately 84.2 percent of its daily active users are outside the US and Canada. (kes)
