ollowing its launch last week, the National Movement of 1,000 Digital Startups has invited local start-ups to take part by opening online registration.

The movement, which aims to produce high quality, digital-technology based start-ups that can have a positive impact by solving problems in Indonesia, targets young people from various backgrounds such as application programming, design, communications, business and finance.

It is important for participants to care about Indonesia’s future and be able to problem-solve and innovate. Registration is open to those who are still developing an idea, do not yet have a team, or already have a product.

During registration, participants are required to make a two-minute video describing a problem that needs to be solved as well as a solution using digital technology. The video should be uploaded to YouTube using the #1000startupdigital hashtag.

“This movement will challenge young people who have a passion for entrepreneurship, an interest and commitment in participating in this movement,” said Gajah Mada University business development and incubation director Hargo Utomo, who is also one of the mentors in the movement.

Participants will go through five stages — Ignition, Workshop, Hackathon and Bootcamp phases over three months, followed by an Incubation period for another three months. The first stage will be held in major cities such as Jakarta on July 30, Surabaya on Aug. 6 and Yogyakarta on Aug. 12. The stage will consist of seminars about start-ups as problem solvers and will be participated in by 400 selected applicants.

The movement was co-initiated by the Communications and Information Ministry alongside KIBAR, a tech start-up ecosystem builder that produces, mentors and nurtures start-ups. The movement hopes Indonesia can become the “Digital Energy of Asia” by 2020 by producing 1,000 start-ups. (kes)
