Binge-watch your summer away with these trashy reality TV shows

It’s time to stop pretending that we don’t find reality television one of our biggest guilty pleasures. Sometimes in life we hit not-quite rock bottom -- think of that space between Jersey or Geordie Shore and Masterchef

This is a list for one of those weird times in your life. You’re welcome.

t’s time to stop pretending that we don’t find reality television one of our biggest guilty pleasures. Sometimes in life we hit not-quite rock bottom -- think of that space between Jersey or Geordie Shore and Masterchef

This is a list for one of those weird times in your life. You’re welcome.

'The World’s Strictest Parents'

The show’s premise follows two rebellious British teenagers being made to live in a strict household for a week, according to their rules and regulations. We see these teens struggle with coping with the rigid lifestyle, and how they learn some shocking life lessons from these serious yet loving parents.

What makes this show literally eye-gluing is the comparisons you’d make with both the teens’ lives and the “strict” family’s life against yourself. You’d think: hmm, could I live like that for a week?

'Extreme Cheapskates'

There’s just something about watching people causing a continental drift just to save a buck that makes your jaw drop. For the entire duration of the show, one is definitely prone to having their minds blown at how needlessly miserly people can be. This show explores the lives of literal extreme cheapskates, and what rituals they conduct in order to save money, such as dumpster diving.

'Wife Swap'

Two wives are made to swap husbands, children and households for two weeks. Without prior knowledge of each other, the wives must live according to their new families’ rules, before eventually implementing their own. The two couples meet to discuss their experiences before returning back to their homes.

This is hilariously entertaining because the two households are always radically different. One wife is usually used to an organized and disciplined life, and the other is liberal and open-minded. The friction between them and their new husbands cause quite a spur. Definitely addictive.

'I Didn’t Know I Was Pregnant'

I know what you’re thinking. How can a woman not know she's pregnant? Fall into this hole of dramatic reenactments of actual experiences of, well, unexpected surprises. You’d definitely be placing yourself in their shoes and wondering what in the world you’d do if you were them.

Great to watch with mothers-to-be and newly married friends, especially if you’re pointing at them, saying “that’s you,” and giggling.

'My Strange Addiction'

Warning: this one’s a little gruesome, but we all know this list is not complete without a mention of My Strange Addiction. While this show is known to make a person gag, it’s just so consistently surprising (maybe even life-threatening) that you can’t help but wonder why in the world you’re still watching it.

Whether it’s an addiction to drinking blood, bathing in bleach or eating sand, it’s perfect for a binge watch during a sick day while drinking tea and blowing your nose.

'My Crazy Obsession'

A less disgusting version of My Strange Addiction is My Crazy Obsession. This show delves into the lives of people who spend every waking moment fixated on a singular ordeal. From cabbage patch dolls to the color pink - anything, really - it just leaves you either amazed at their dedication, or full of pity because there are very few things that make them happy. One thing’s for sure though, you will barely blink during it.
