hese past years, Hollywood has been seeing a positive movement of actors, actresses and general viewers asking for more diverse casts and storylines as evidenced by this year’s Oscars #Osscarssowhite online campaign. The basic notion is simple, people are becoming more aware that in most movies and TV series, it’s always a straight white male who gets the lead role.
The series listed below are breaking the aforementioned stereotypes and have proved that diverse productions can also be commercial successes in the entertainment industry.
Scandal
Created by Shonda Rhimes, who is known for her work in the long-running hit series Grey’s Anatomy, this American political drama centers around Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington), a successful African-American woman who works as a media consultant slash problem-fixer for the United States government. While she fixes other people’s problems, she herself can’t seem to make amends with her past while also dealing with her secret love affair with the president.
The series itself has earned actress Kerry Washington two Emmy nominations and a Golden Globe nomination in the Best Performance by an Actress in a Drama Television Series category.
Fresh off the Boat
When this 22-minute comedy series first premiered on the ABC network, many doubted whether a show about an Asian-American family could last for more than one season.
Well, as it turns out Fresh off the Boat has recently finished its second season in May and is being renewed by the network for its third season. The everyday antics of the Huang family will entertain viewers and present something many Asians can relate to.
Master of None
Series creator, comedian Aziz Ansari has been loud in voicing his thoughts about the diversity issue in Hollywood, like that one time he penned a powerful article addressing the topic in The New York Times.
In this Netflix series, Aziz who is of Indian descent, stars as the lead role named Dev who is described as a 30-year-old actor who lives in New York. Being the creator of the series, Aziz aims to portrait other minorities by casting actors and actresses from different backgrounds.
Orange is the new Black
Critically acclaimed Orange is the New Black revolves around underrepresented minorities namely prisoners, women and LGBT people. Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling) is a 30-year-old woman who is sentenced to fifteen months in prison for the crime of transporting money to her drug-dealing girlfriend.
The Netflix series has so far earned six Golden Globe nominations and successfully catapulted its actresses to stardom including Taylor Schilling herself, Laverne Cox and Uzo Aduba.
