fter frightening its audience with Murder House, Asylum, Coven, Freak Show, and Hotel, the anthology horror series American Horror Story (AHS) has returned with its latest installment, My Roanoke Nightmare?.

Following the release of teasers filled with secrecy, this sixth installment adapts a true story about the lost colonists of Roanoke whom their existence is still unclear until now. Unlike the previous five seasons, My Roanoke Nightmare? offers a true crime documentary style with reenactments.

The storyline itself follows the life of a happily-married couple, Shelby and Matt, who moved from Los Angeles to a small neighborhood in Roanoke Island, North Carolina, where they live in a big yet old, creepy house surrounded by the forest. They later start to experience strange incidents, such as raining teeth, a dead pig in front of their house, apparitions of two girls inside the house, hanging straw dolls, and other terrifying events that threaten their lives. These weird incidents keep on occurring even though Matt has asked his sister, Lee, to accompany his wife. At the end of the recently premiered first episode, Shelby's car hits an old lady in the middle of the road and suddenly she finds herself being trapped among the lost Roanoke colonists and desperately tries to find help.

Although the concept of “scary neighborhood and house with dark secrets” have been used by so many horror movies, this latest season of AHS still successfully terrifies the audiences. It may be less scary, but it keeps viewers watching and waiting for the next terror.

Produced by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk, AHS season 6 still features some familiar names from previous seasons such as Lily Rabe, Sarah Paulson, Kathy Bates and Angela Bassett. It also introduces Andre Holland, who plays the “real-life” Matt, and Cuba Gooding Jr. in the reenactments. Although it is not yet announced, audience will find other popular names like Wes Bentley, Evan Peters and Lady Gaga in the end credits. (kes)
