Author Eka Kurniawan wins Emerging Voices fiction award

oted Indonesian author Eka Kurniawan has won the Emerging Voices fiction award for Man Tiger initiated by business news organization The Financial Times and global asset management solution provider OppenheimerFunds.
Announced Monday at the New York Public Library, Eka was recognized alongside Clarissa Campolina from Brazil, who won the Emerging Voices film award for Solon and Gareth Nyandoro from Zimbabwe, who took home the Emerging Voices art award. Each received a cash award of $40,000.
"I think I can speak for the entire panel of judges when I say that it is incredible to be able to share the winners' stories and amazing talent for a second year," said Michael Skapinker, associate editor of the Financial Times and chair of the judges.

Up to 797 submissions from 64 emerging market nations were reportedly reviewed and selected by the judges, who looked for the most original pieces that best showcased the art form and voice of a region.
Eka previously told The Jakarta Post that he didn't expect to be nominated and considered the award a great appreciation for his work.
Born in 1975, the writer has published four novels, four short stories and a non-fiction work. The winning book, Man Tiger, was also nominated for the Man Booker International Prize 2016 and has been translated into six different languages, while his latest novel, titled O, was released in March 2016.
