T

he country's social media mix is apparently changing. While Indonesians are still heavy users of Facebook, BlackBerry Messenger and Instagram, the usage of Twitter is reportedly declining while there has been a significant increase of Snapchat users.

According to a recent survey by market research company Kantar TNS, 13 percent of Indonesians were using Snapchat, a jump from the 5 percent in 2015. Meanwhile, Twitter usage dropped from 48 to 36 percent.

Kantar TNS Asia Pacific digital director Zoë Lawrence said with the progression of technology, such as better camera phones and faster internet connections, people were moving away from 140-character Twitter messages to image-based social media like Instagram.

"Crafting your expression in a limited way had been popular; [but] now users are starting to do it in a more visual way. It is simpler to express yourself by using a photo like on Instagram," Lawrence told The Jakarta Post in Jakarta on Wednesday.

Moreover, she said, with the rise of Snapchat, Indonesian companies should consider using it for corporate activities like branding and marketing, especially to reach young customers as most Indonesian Snapchat users were 16 to 34 years old.

"Companies can create their own consumer-engagement media, or they can partner with media entities that already exist on Snapchat, such as BuzzFeed," she added.

Conducted in 57 countries, the survey involved 70,000 respondents, in which 1,662 of them were Indonesians. (kes)
