ushroom-infused coffee has been labeled the latest health food trend and a caffeine substitute that offers lots of nutrients to boot.

Four Sigmatic, the company that founded this mushroom-flavored caffeine fix, believes that it contains properties almost identical to that of regular coffee, only better. That is, aside from improving one’s metabolism and being able to prevent Alzheimer’s, it is said to be able to curb insomnia and anxiety that regular coffee cannot do.

According to independent.co.uk , Rachel Wilkerson Miller from BuzzFeed shares that the fungi-variant does not taste like mushrooms at all and is a middle ground between coffee and tea that have “mellow” and “rich” undertones; making it less unappetizing as it sounds.

Coffee fans are aware of the benefits regular coffee can bring, but they also know that drinking too much has its side effects. Four Sigmatic claims to provide the same caffeine effect like strengthening brain power and boosting efficiency while eliminating all the downsides.

The drink is created by liquefying and drying various types of mushrooms to make an essence that is then combined with regular coffee. The maitake mushroom blend controls blood-sugar levels and the alkaline chaga mushroom neutralizes coffee acid that is known to cause upset stomachs amongst coffee drinkers.

Nonetheless, nutrition editor of health.com Cynthia Sass commented that it would be unideal to make the drink at home as maitake mushrooms tend to control blood pressure. “It’s also important to note that chagas have a blood thinning effect, so they shouldn’t be consumed before any surgery”, she added.
