While some people are pop-culturally aware, there are some who struggle to even watch one type of TV show. Those who fall in the latter category are easily put off by watching a series like Game of Thrones— not because it’s bad, but because it already consists of too many seasons and its spoilers are everywhere online.

So, for those of you looking to start watching new TV shows that you can keep track of, here’s a list of fresh-out-of-the-oven Netflix Originals that don’t have too many seasons out yet. These shows will reel you in almost immediately.

The Crown

The Crown explores Queen Elizabeth II’s reign over the past six decades. The series has so far released one season consisting of 10 episodes and tells the tale of post-war Britain. It perfectly captures both the highs and lows of royal life alongside themes of power, scandal and heartbreak.

With six seasons planned and packed with astounding cinematography of Buckingham Palace, The Crown is a show that will make you want to binge watch all the episodes in one go, even if you’re not passionate about the British monarchy.

Stranger Things

The Duffer Brothers’ Stranger Things kicks off with the disappearance of a boy named Will from the spooky fictional city of Hawkins, Indiana. Will is abducted by a vicious, alien-like creature. His mother (Winona Ryder) reports the incident to the local sheriff so he can investigate the case of her missing child. Meanwhile, Will’s Dungeons-and-Dragons-loving and determined best friends use their bikes to do some searching of their own and run into an outlandish girl with telepathic abilities named Eleven.

With eight episodes out there just waiting to be watched, the story only gets better and better with each passing scene. Give this love-letter to the 80s a shot if you’re looking for sci-fi shows with an old-school-cum-extra-terrestrial mystery vibe.

Jane the Virgin

Jane is more than your average goody two-shoes virgin with a heart of gold. She faces a complete twist of fate and finds herself impregnated through unforeseen artificial-insemination, leading her to juggle a teaching career, motherhood and her dreams of becoming a writer.

But what’s great about Jane is that she manages everything so gracefully and you can’t help but admire her positive attitude toward life. For every curveball that life throws at her, she believes that there’s a way out of it. She carries the love of her family in whatever she pursues and never forgets what her Abuela (what Jane calls her grandmother) taught her.

It is mesmerizing to watch Jane experience different feelings from perky happiness to genuine sadness. She wears her heart on her sleeve without trying to conceal her weaknesses. This serial carries with it a bundle of life lessons that etches a mark in the minds of viewers.

Riverdale

Arriving on Netflix one episode per week is The CW’s most recent comic book adaptation, a teen mystery-drama inspired by Archie Comic characters called Riverdale. This series gives you major throwback nostalgia—although the TV show features a plot that’s completely different from the one in the comic books. Variety refers to it as an “eerie and offbeat take on the high school mythos”.

Riverdale follows the adventures of Riverdale High after one of its students suddenly disappears on the fourth of July. The pilot entails the start of a new school year where students are suddenly faced with a dark mystery alongside high-school drama. Only two episodes are out on Netflix, so this gives watchers plenty of time to catch up. From a network that released shows such as ArrowThe Flash and The Vampire Diaries, expect the series to be crowded with very appealing actors and interesting mysteries.

A Series of Unfortunate Events

Adapted from Daniel Handler’s strange but much-loved books, A Series of Unfortunate Events tells the story of Violet, Klaus and Sunny Baudelaire who suddenly become orphans after the mysterious death of their parents. The show chronicles the miserable events of their lives as they’re passed from one guardian to another. The narrator, Lemony Snicket, details the story of the up-to-no-good Count Olaf (Neil Patrick Harris) who tries to get a hold of the children’s inherited fortune.

But no matter how much the opening song tells watchers to “look away, look away” because “this show will wreck [their] evening, whole life and day”, this TV show creates a phantasmagorical end result. So far, eight of a total 26 episodes in the first season have been released and every one of them brims with great acting, glowing wit and an unparalleled visual aesthetic.
