Grey's Anatomy is a medical drama series about a group of doctors at a hospital in Seattle created by TV producer-slash-screenwriter Shonda Rhimes. The series is recognized as being “colorblind” as it frequently casts characters of different races. However, the episode, which aired on March 30, is said to be the series’ first that featured hijabis.

The series' star Ellen Pompeo, who plays the role of Meredith Grey, reportedly was also the director of the episode. On Twitter, Pompeo said that the scene was intentional and she felt happy to be able to do her part and to make people feel like they mattered.
