GLEAM Collective's interactive lighting installation featured at Vivid Sydney 2017

One of the installations featured by the Vivid Sydney 2017 is "The Unnoticed", which is located in a hidden alleyway at the heart of The Rocks. Initiated by the GLEAM Collective, "The Unnoticed" is an interactive lighting installation that has a sensor that causes the installation to change color depending on the visitors who pass through the alleyway.

T

he annual Vivid Sydney is an event that highlights light, music and ideas. It features many activities, including large light installations and projections, music performances and discussions.

This year, the event’s ninth installment is being held for 23 days until June 17 in several locations in Sydney. Among them are the Sydney Opera House and The Rocks, which is recognized as “the birthplace of modern Sydney”.

“So if there are a lot of people moving past the alleyway, the lighting will keep changing colors,” Kristina Grasiella, one of the Indonesian members of the GLEAM Collective, told The Jakarta Post prior to the event.

The team chose the location because it suited their goals. “We want to transform something small that is rarely noticed by people into something beautiful,” she stated. “It’s because we want to express an idea that everyone can be bright and beneficial to their surroundings.”

Kristina explained that the project’s difficulty lies in its mechanism and technical aspects.

“This is our first experience participating in Vivid Sydney and designing something that requires knowledge and technical, mechanical and electrical abilities,” she added.

The GLEAM Collective was formed for Vivid Sydney 2017. It consists of six Sydney-based emerging designers and engineers from Indonesia, Hong Kong and Australia: Marsha Levina, Jenny Wong, Kristina Grasiella, Eduardus Andrew, James Sulaiman and Anthony Zeater.

Their initial idea came from two of its members, Marsha and Eduardus as alumni of Architectural Design at the University of Technology Sydney. Marsha herself often passes through the alleyway at The Rocks.

“We thought that we could make something in the small alley that is infrequently regarded by other people, [so that the alley] will become something beautiful,” Kristina said. “Therefore, we named it ‘The Unnoticed’.”

“We hope the visitors can enjoy our installation by interacting with it, such as by taking photos or playing with its interactive feature,” she added.

Those who want to visit the lighting installation can go from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. The admission is free. (asw)
