Director James Cameron announced at a private event that actress Linda Hamilton will be returning to the Terminator movie franchise.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cameron hoped that Hamilton’s return will make a statement on gender roles in action movies once again.

“As meaningful as she was to gender and action stars everywhere back then, it’s going to make a huge statement to have that seasoned warrior that she’s become return,” Cameron said in the report.

With Arnold Schwarzenegger already set to return, Hamilton’s addition to the line-up also suggests that something big is in the works.

“We’re starting a search for an 18-something woman to be the new centerpiece of the new story,” Cameron added. “We still fold time. We will have characters from the future and the present. There will be mostly new characters, but we’ll have Arnold and Linda’s characters to anchor it.”

The movie will be directed by Tim Miller (Deadpool) with Cameron and Skydance as producers. Its will be based on a story which Cameron created. Miller and Cameron also created a writers room to iron out the details on what is planned to be a trilogy.

Members of the writers room include David Goyer (Blade, Christopher Nolan’s Batman movies) and his frequent collaborator Justin Rhodes, Charles Eglee (Dark Angel), and Josh Friedman (of the TV series The Sarah Connor Chronicles).

Miller and Cameron treats this movie, or series of movies, as a direct sequel to the 1991 Terminator 2: Judgement Day. The theme will once again explore the potential dangers of technology.
