ore than 185 million mobile phone users have registered their prepaid SIM cards as of Feb. 4, according to Communications and Information Ministry data.

The ministry’s director general for post and informatics management, Ahmad M. Ramli, said in an official statement an average of 1.5 million SIM cards per day were being registered.

As reported by Antara, Ahmad reminded the public that the SIM cards needed to be registered by no later than Feb. 28.

Ahmad said the ministry had worked together with cellular service operators to raise awareness of the SIM card registration regulation. Those who have yet to register their numbers will receive a text message reminder from the operator.

Ahmad added that the customers’ data is protected by the law, hence cellular service operators should keep it private.

The regulation was first applied on Oct. 31, 2017, aiming to protect SIM card holders from crimes committed using mobile phones and to prevent their phone numbers from being misused. (jes/kes)
