T

he Jakarta Post Digital together with The Jakarta Post Writing Center hosted the first Writers’ Gathering on Feb. 8 at The Writers Bar, Raffles Hotel Jakarta.

The intimate event welcomed those who have contributed to TheJakartaPost.com as community writers and the alumni of The Jakarta Post Writing Center.

Maggie Tiojakin, managing director of The Jakarta Post Writing Center, said "As a learning center, it's important that we measure our success by our level of commitment to our alumni and future participants.”

"Running community programs such as the Writers' Gathering is a part of that commitment, and we are extremely proud of our collaboration with our digital media team and their community writers,” she added.

At the event, participants were introduced to both The Jakarta Post Digital and The Jakarta Post Writing Center and how they can contribute or get training to sharpen their writing skills. Enthusiasm ran high as each and every attendee gushed about their love for writing, as well as learning more about both entities that reside under The Jakarta Post brand.

Annisa Steviani, social media and community manager of The Jakarta Post Digital, is excited to have more community writers on board. “We always welcome writers from any walks of life to use our platform as a tool to amplify their work as well as sharpen their writing skills and confidence by letting the public read what they have to say. Having this kind of event is one way to cultivate new writers.”

Noting that the Post’s community channel is carefully moderated and curated, Annisa advised that writers should take advantage of feedback from editors. “The articles sent by our community writers still have to pass our editors’ desks to ensure quality. Although the articles don’t always reflect our editorial views, the quality should be on par with The Jakarta Post’s standards. So I would advise aspiring writers to take advantage of the input from our editors because it helps to better their work,” she said.
