atik was chosen as the main theme for 2018 Borobudur Masterpiece: Indonesia Wears Cloths, a fashion and art event slated for April 18 at Borobudur temple.
Kompas reported that the event was being organized by PT Taman Wisata Candi Borobodur, Prambanan and Ratu Boko and Bank Rakyat Indonesia, with First Lady Iriana Joko Widodo selected to officiate the opening ceremony.
Aside from coinciding with World Heritage Day, the day of the event is also close to the birthday of national heroine Kartini on April 21.

Kartini, who was known to be a fan of the arts, especially batik, was the country's first ambassador of Indonesian batik.
Musa Widyatmodjo, art director of the event, said wearing kain (cloths) was a tradition that should be passed down to younger generations.
“People in the old days created cloths to be worn. Now, batik is cut to be made into an attire,” said Musa on Wednesday.
The event will present a timeline of batik by having Indonesian women sport the traditional cloth. Local fashion designers will present garments with themes of past, present and future.
One of the biggest brands in batik, Danar Hadi, will present Surakarta-style batik of the past with a parang (sloped lines) motif using the theme “the influence of time and environment”.
Designer Chossy Latu is set to showcase batik from the present day. Having spent the last 20 years focused on presenting batik to the international market, he will display cocktail and evening attire from the late designer Iwan Tirta.

Meanwhile, Purana brand will present the future theme. Nonita Respati, founder of Purana, said she would showcase garments while experimenting with natural dye.
The event will be held in the Lumbini area of Borobudur temple. Along with fashion and art performances, 200 people consisting of singers, musicians and puppeteers will also participate in the event. (wng)
