T

he largest Indonesian contemporary art exhibition and bazaar, ARTJOG 2018, which will be held from May 4th to June 4th at the Jogja National Museum (JNM), Yogyakarta will be the most interesting ARTJOG to date.

Themed “Enlightenment Toward Various Futures”, the exhibition will feature works from 54 artists, nine of which are foreign artists from six countries.

Heri Pemad of Heri Pemad Art Management (HPAM), the event’s caretaker, said on Thursday, “ARTJOG 2018, or the 11th ARTJOG is very different compared to previous editions. The difference lies in the various artwork that will be featured, and also the packaging of the event.”

Commissioned artist Mulyana “Mogus” will feature crocheted artwork titled “Sea Remembers” in a diamond-shaped façade. Mulyana’s work will be displayed in front of the JNM building.

“I learned a lot from many people in the process of creating this artwork. This is where I acquired enlightenment,” said the artist.

Mulyana crafted the artwork with the help of 70 ladies and one gentleman. The artwork, which visualizes the beauty of coral reefs, used up to 5,000 rolls of yarn.

ARTJOG curator Bambang “Toko” Witjaksono said the artwork that would be displayed at ARTJOG 2018 had been heavily curated.

“We received 1,700 pieces of artwork from 1501 artists and only 12 artists got through,” Bambang said.

One of the international artists featured is Ronald Ventura, a Southeast Asian icon whose works are coveted by collectors.

Aside from the exhibition, there will be three to four performances each night during the full month of ARTJOG 2018. (asw)
