Though Yahoo Messenger is shutting down next month, Yahoo does not look to be giving up hope.
Recently the company and its parent Oath announced that they were in the process of rolling out two new versions of Yahoo Mail, one for mobile web, as well as an app for Android Go.
“We’ve heard loud and clear from users that they’re not always ready to make the big leap to downloading an app that takes up any storage space on their phone,” Joshua Jacobson, senior director of product management for Yahoo Mail, told TechCrunch.
“People with high-capacity phones may want to save that space for photos or videos, while others with entry-level smartphones may just have limited space from the get-go. Further, some folks share devices or borrow a family member’s to access their email. This is all especially true in developing markets.”

Yahoo Mail has experienced stagnation in recent years, with the company reporting that it has 27.8 million monthly active users, which is only about 2 million more than it had a year ago. In comparison, competitor Gmail recently reported 1.4 billion users this past April.
But as reported on TechCrunch, developing markets have the potential to boost Yahoo’s numbers significantly, especially as Yahoo Mail is already available in 46 languages and 70 markets. (sul/kes)
