fter director James Gunn was fired earlier this month from the third Guardians of the Galaxy film over old tweets, the cast recently issued an open letter to Walt Disney Studios calling for Gunn’s reinstatement, reports the BBC.

In the open letter, the Guardians cast expressed their love, support and gratitude for Gunn, whom they called “a good man” and “our friend”.

According to The Verge, the letter also gave specific references to America’s growing political divide due to the widespread perception that Gunn was targeted for his public stance against Donald Trump.

His controversial tweets were found and publicized by alt-right media personalities.

Additionally, some 350,000 people have signed a Change.org petition for Disney to rehire Gunn.

Gunn, who directed the Marvel Cinematic Universe's sleeper hit Guardians of the Galaxy and its 2017 sequel, was fired on July 20 by Disney after old tweets poking fun at pedophilia and child abuse resurfaced. The tweets date back to 2008.

The director issued an apology on Twitter following the incident.

“It’s not to say I’m better, but I am very, very different than I was a few years ago; today I try to root my work in love and connection and less in anger. My days saying something just because it’s shocking and trying to get a reaction are over,” he tweeted. (anm/mut)
