andung Philharmonic is set to start its fourth season with a concert titled Legenda (legend) at the Hilton Hotel in Bandung on Sunday, September 23.
The conductor, Robert Nordling, told The Jakarta Post that the theme of legend was chosen as it was considered to represent the four programs to be played. The four programs comprise Overtur Tragis, Op.81 by Johannes Brahms, Totentanz by Franz Liszt on solo piano played by Aryo Wicaksono, Ngasirah by Marisa Sharon Hartanto and Symphony No.5 in C Minor by Ludwig van Beethoven.
“Everybody knows Beethoven’s Symphony No.5 but we are also here to celebrate living people, Marisa and Aryo Wicaksono, major, and living successfully in America, living in New York, one of the hardest city to live for musicians. [The concert combines] legend from the past and living people,” said Nordling at a press conference on Thursday.
Aryo with his piano would be interpreting Totentanz, Franz Liszt’s repertoire with the theme dance of death. An orchestra led by Nordling will accompany Aryo.
“The repertoire makes a brilliant sound with the piano, not showing off technical finesse but it has interesting characters [of sound], synchronized with the orchestra,” Aryo says depicting what he is about to play.
Nordling also appreciates Marisa who composed a number of repertoires including Ngasirah, the piece that would premiere in Indonesia for the first time.
“Initially I was going to write about Kartini, but she has already been widely acknowledged. In the process of my composition I became interested in her mother, Ngasirah, who is almost unheard of,” said Marisa.

The diversity of stories in the music compositions will be staged in a 60-minute performance. Nordling said he doesn’t promise to present something that is different from Beethoven’s Symphony No.5 in C Minor.
“Classical music [is a] little bit different, as a conductor, when you leave the concert I do not want [you] to remember me. I want you to know about Beethoven,” said Nordling. (mut)
