outh Korean company Samsung plans to invest US$40 million in Pokémon Go creator Niantic in an exclusive games collaboration deal.

According to The Inquirer, the deal will have Niantic's games pre-loaded on Galaxy smartphones, similar to Samsung's partnership with Epic Games, which saw Fortnite pre-installed on the Galaxy Note 9.

The deal is said to focus on an exclusive Harry Potter game utilizing Samsung's S-Pen stylus as a makeshift magic wand. It is unclear whether it will be an all-new game designed exclusively for Galaxy phones.

The Inquirer also reported that Niantic’s location-based game Ingress is included in the deal, but not the Pokémon Go franchise, the firm’s main earner.

"Niantic is hesitant to collaborate on Pokémon Go, since they are super protective of that franchise," a source said.

Niantic’s need to raise money for an IPO and Samsung’s intention to “differentiate itself from its smartphone competitors” are said to be the reason for the deal. Both firms still refuse to give any confirmation regarding the issue. (iru/kes)
