ndonesia is rich in traditional fabric and patterns that can be worn on various occasions, from formal to casual, and have certain meanings depending on their origins.

If this is your first attempt at incorporating traditional patterns into your daily outfits, Didiet Maulana, designer and cofounder of Ikat Indonesia, suggested you start with a simple one.

“You can start with lurik [striped woven material] and if your tops already have a pattern on it, you should combine it with a less intense bottom,” said Didiet during the launch of Ikat Indonesia on March 1 at The Goods Dept. Pacific Place, South Jakarta.

The Jakarta-born designer said people should wear a maximum of three patterns in one outfit. “But you need to adjust the colors,” he said. “We can take one color out of the pattern. If you want to wear it at work, you can use charcoal grey or mustard for a vibrant touch.”

“I received many comments from hijab wearers and Middle Eastern customers after we launched our swimwear last season. They said they liked the swimwear but they wanted something modest,” Didiet said. “Our burqini will feature longer arm length, hence it can be paired with leggings.”

Meanwhile, Amrit Dodani, creative director of The Goods Dept., praised Ikat Indonesia for featuring collections with good fabric and sizing that was accessible and wearable for everyone.

“Didiet is also very friendly and I see that his customers are already attached to him. A designer has to be accessible and Didiet shows that quality,” Amrit said, adding that the store planned to welcome more local designers and beauty brands in the future. (kes)
