o:p>Despite their end-to-end encryption system, WhatsApp and Telegram messaging apps are still prone to malware attacks, according to a study by security products and solutions provider Symantec.

As reported by kompas.com, the security flaw allows hackers to edit media files like photos and audio. However, the photos sent won't be the same as the ones received despite both being the same data. For instance, a photo of a face could be altered into a different face, or the hackers could edit the numbers on a proof of payment.

According to Symantec, the malware entered through external storage space. When the data is being saved in it, other apps can obtain access to that data before users even see them and manipulate them.

WhatsApp is vulnerable because of its default feature that will automatically save data that is being downloaded to its external storage. The same thing happens with Telegram if its users activate the "save to gallery" feature.

Following these findings, WhatsApp told CNET that it would investigate the matter and release a software update for Android phones.

While waiting, users can try to protect themselves from this malware by deactivating their media download feature in the settings menu for WhatsApp users, and the same with Telegram's "save to gallery” option.

However, do note that such settings may lead to limitations for shared images for WhatsApp users. Since many apps have an image storage menu, saving data to external space allows you to keep the images even if you have deleted the app. (nic/kes)
