ore Indonesian designers have joined the global sustainable-lifestyle trend, looking to find a balance between the continuance of business and preservation of natural resources.
Taruna Kusmayadi from the Indonesia Fashion Chamber acknowledged that the concept of sustainability was still unfamiliar among designers.
However, he said, the community had long used mainly local products and produced locally.
“But we realize it has become a hot topic and I think going forward we have to start thinking about the preservation of nature and business continuity because fashion is a lifestyle and it’s all about novelty and trends,” he said.
Taruna spoke at the launch of the Gaya movement, an initiative taken by the operator of shopping mall Grand Indonesia in Central Jakarta on Aug. 15.
Gaya, which literally translates as style, will become the mall's signature annual event.
“We aim to encourage socially responsible shopping,” said Kantoro Permadi, the mall’s general manager of marketing, communications and operations.
