ale twin brown bears named Sakti and Satria have grown into healthy and frisky cubs four months after being born at Taman Safari Indonesia II Prigen conservation park in Pasuruan, East Java.

According to veterinarian Hanifah Agus Setiawan, the cubs have started to mimic the habit of their parents, Joy and Chiko, such as how they eat, drink and play in the pool.

Born on June 7, Sakti and Satria now each weigh around 3.05 kilograms from initially only 500 grams.

Their arrival brings the collection of brown bears at the zoo to 11 following a successful breeding program.

"The labor process of these cubs was tiring. After being bred naturally, it took another three weeks in the dark and silent isolation cage, where Joy was separated from the male bear, Chiko," Hanifah told The Jakarta Post at the park on Oct. 29.

Joy was also required to fast for up to one month prior to labor.

Currently, Sakti and Satria are in the process of growing up and adapting to the new environment alongside their parents. Male brown bears usually detest their newly born cubs as they see the cubs as competitors that threaten their territory.

In the wild, brown bears live in East Europe and North America. Weighing from 130 kg to 700 kg, they are considered the biggest bear species other than polar bears and the biggest land carnivore. (kes)
