G

oogle has announced its annual Year in Search, listing countries’ top searches of 2019 in nine categories that include public figures, songs, word meanings, how to’s and moments.

“Year in Search shows that 2019 is the year Indonesian citizens paid more attention to change and hope. From reactions and the consumption of information [and] lifestyles, to figures who inspire change,” said Veronica Utami, head of marketing at Google Indonesia.

On the list of this year’s top searches is newcomer Andmesh Kamaleng’s single “Cinta Luar Biasa”, the presidential election, the word “bucin” as popularized by YouTuber Skinnyindonesian24, Education and Culture Minister Nadiem Makarim and the sexual violence bill (RUU KUHP).

“I really did not expect ‘Cinta Luar Biasa’ to be at the top and popular in Google Indonesia,” Andmesh said in a video shown during the announcement on Dec. 12, as reported by kompas.com. “Thank you for the extraordinary appreciation in 2019.”

In a statement released by Google Indonesia, Indonesians are said to have tried to better understand information and situations. Searches such as “How to measure ideal body weight”, “ways to lose weight naturally” and “how to reduce cholesterol level” are also listed, indicating Indonesians’ aim to lead a healthier lifestyle this year.

Aside from the how to’s, Indonesians also looked for the meanings of popular slang words, such as “Ferguso” (taken from the word “Pulguso” or dog, popularized by Mexican telenovela Marimar, which was aired in the country in the 1990s), "bucin" (an abbreviation of “budak cinta”, meaning “slave to love”) and “santuy” (which derives from “santai” or relax).

K-pop sensations BTS and Blackpink made the trending figures list, alongside Nadiem Makarim, Edhy Prabowo, Wishnutama and others.

This year also saw the passing of several big names such as former president BJ Habibie, former first lady Ani Yudhoyono, artist Robby Tumewu, as well as South Korean stars Sulli and Goo Hara.
