A movie and television show streaming site, IndoXXI, shut down its operations on Jan.1.

The administrator of IndoXXI posted “Goodbye 2019. Goodbye IndoXXI. Thank you” on the website’s home page, as reported by kompas.com

Up to December 2019, the website had to constantly change its site address to elude regulators following renewed scrutiny of digital piracy. On Dec. 24, IndoXXI posted an announcement that it would stop streaming movies as of Jan. 1. “It’s hard, but it must be done,” the text read.

On Dec. 26, the government blocked more than 1,000 websites that stream bootlegged videos. Communications and Information Minister Johnny G. Plate said the measure was necessary to prevent further damage to Indonesia’s creative industry and its business relationships with other countries.

A recent survey conducted by global public opinion and data company YouGov revealed that 63 percent of online consumers in Indonesia preferred to watch premium content through illegal torrent websites.

Among the 35 percent of those using illegal means, IndoXXI’s website and app were the most popular channels to watch movies for free.

The hashtags #indoxxi and #indoxx1 were among the top trending ones on Twitter at the time of writing as netizens posted their farewell notes to the website.

“Me at 11:59 p.m. Dec. 31, 2019: In anticipation of IndoXXI shutting down. Thank you for all the IndoXXI staff, from us your loyal viewers.”

In an opposing note, user @rzllzll urged others to abandon illegal streaming sites. “With legal online streaming sites such as Iflix, Hooq, Viu and Netflix [available] it’s time to move on from illegal ones.” (wng)
