An online dangdut contest will be held to scout for new, fresh talent in the dangdut music scene.

Dubbed BaBe KonDang, the contest is being organized by news aggregation app BaBe (Baca Berita) and Portrait Artist Management, which manages renowned dangdut singers such as Evi Masamba and Sendy Ariani.

Held from February to March, the contest is teaming up with 10 regional radio stations, including Jakarta's Hot FM and Radio FM in Banten's Serang, as well as DFAS FM in Indramayu, Ray FM in Cirebon, Tamala FM in Tasikmalaya and Cakra FM in Bandung, all in West Java.

Applicants can join the contest by registering on the BaBe app. They are required to upload videos of them singing dangdut songs and choose the radio station based on their domicile. Auditions and the voting process will be done online.

Shelly Tantri, senior business development of BaBe, expressed the hope they could find potential talent through the competition to further improve the music industry. “All participants have equal chances of becoming new stars in the industry,” Shelly said in an official statement.

Main commissioner of Portrait Artist Management Yogi Adriyadi said he appreciated the collaboration with BaBe to search for new talent in the music scene. “The dangdut music never ceases to develop and we’re optimistic that this competition will receive positive feedback from the public,” he said.

BaBe KonDang is also expected to develop the creative economy in Indonesia. Cucu Ahmad Kurnia, Jakarta Tourism and Creative Economy head, said dangdut was part of a creative industry whose audience came from different layers of society. “With the right support, hopefully the dangdut music industry can grow bigger not only in Indonesia, but also abroad,” Cucu said.
