The somber song features the distinct voice of Rhoma accompanied by compelling touches of organ, electric guitar and seruling (flute).
“Invisible, untouchable, yet it terrifies humankind,” he sings. “Only to you, God, do we turn for protection from the threat.”
Rhoma began his musical career in the 1960s and is often referred to as the King of Dangdut for transforming the musical genre. He gained national fame with his band Soneta Group in the 1970s with songs that feature mixed influences from traditional and foreign musical traditions. The renowned musician is known to capture social criticism and political sentiment and voice those out in his songs.

Last year, he said he wished for dangdut to become popular around the world. The genre is considered adaptable and can blend with other genres of music.
In March 2019, an American tribute band to Rhoma called Dangdut Cowboys held a show at American cultural center @america in Jakarta. The band was founded by ethnomusicology professor Andrew Weintraub, who is also the author of Dangdut Stories: A Social and Musical History of Indonesia’s Most Popular Music.
Rhoma believes dangdut musicians and singers must adapt to the changing times. “Dangdut cannot be stuck in a particular way, it cannot be stagnant. Dangdut should always adapt to the times as it must always be universal and aspirational,” he said.
“Virus Corona” is available on music streaming platforms and the YouTube channel of GP Records. (wng)
