Pratchett will return to bookstores in September with a collection of early stories, entitled The Time-travelling Caveman, which he wrote while working as a journalist for local newspapers in the late 1960s.

Published for the first time by Doubleday Children's, The Time-travelling Caveman will take readers "to the top of the highest mountain, or down to the bottom of the deepest depths of the sea."

"This is where it took Doggins on his Awfully Big Adventure: a quest full of magic and flying machines. (And the world's best joke -- trust me, it's hilarious)," the publisher teased in the description of the forthcoming collection of short stories.

The short stories featured in The Time-travelling Caveman originally appeared in the British newspapers Bucks Free Press and Western Daily Press in the '60s and early '70s.

While trying his hands at journalism, Pratchett also published in 1971 his debut novel, The Carpet People.

Written when the English author was only 23 years old, The Carpet People tells the story of the evil Fray as he sweeps a trail of destruction across the imaginary land of Carpet.

Much like The Carpet People, The Time-travelling Caveman contains much of the humor that later became a major part of Pratchett's oeuvre.

"There is so much in these stories that shows you the germ of an idea, which would go on to become a fully fledged Terry Pratchett novel, and so much hilarity that we know kids will love. That is what makes the stories so special -- they are for kids and adults, and kids who want to be adults, and adults who are still really kids. Which is exactly who a Terry Pratchett book should be for," Ruth Knowles and Tom Rawlinson, the editors of Pratchett's children's books, said in a statement to the Guardian.

The Time-travelling Caveman is slated for release on September 3, with pre-orders already available.
